Built in 1886 as a water works, the Theatre de L'Ile building has served many functions over the years. In 1974 a fire destroyed the inner structure. In 1976, Hull's City Council and the National Capital Commission joined forces to restore this historical monument and create the first municipal theatre in Quebec. Its stage showcases both community and professional productions. Since the establishment of the theatre, the City of Gatineau has owned the building and manages it through the Arts and Culture Department.
