KILMARNOCK LOCKSTATION The original name of this lockstation was Maitland's Lock, owing to the fact that the surrounding land belonged to a retired military man named James Maitland. He was given the position of lockmaster at the station as partial compensation for his land and he continued in this capacity until 1846 when he was granted a retirement allowance. The name "Maitland's Lock" continued through the remainder of the 19th century. The Maitland family operated a ferry from the mainland to the island on which the lockstation is now located. Lockstation services: parking, charts and permit sales, on-site identification, picnic areas, day use docking, boater camping and overnight mooring. Swimming, fishing and boat watching are here.
