The most characteristic topographical feature of the area is a series of drumlins separated by long, flat lowlands. An extensive portion of the lowland areas supports a variety of wetlands consisitng of streams, ponds, marshes, treed and thicket swamps and wet meadows. These wetlands are supplied with water by springs, streams and infiltration from uplands. Many notable bird species are regularly observed in the Sancturary including nesting great horned owls, and red-tailed hawks, and performing American woodcoock, upland sandpiper and common snipe.
