Between 1898 and 1957, the trail served as a railway between Ottawa and New York. In 1979, the municipality purchased the trail and converted it for recreational purposes. The trail is currently 7.2 km long and links the villages of Embrun and Russell. Plans are also in place to extend the trail to the City of Ottawa. Essentially 8 km length, asphalt surface running between Russel and Embrun. Most popular uses: Walking, Cycling, Rollerblading, Jogging, Cross-Country Skiing. The rail-trail is accessible to the physically challenged No Motorized Use or Horseback Riding permitted.
