Almonte, once known as "the Little Manchester of Canada", offers you an opportunity to experience the origins of the Canadian textile industry. Situated on the banks of the scenic Mississippi River, Almonte is only a 30 minute drive from the Nation's Capital. Due to the many waterfalls along the Mississippi River the textile industry established itself in the early 1800's and by 1881 the area was the leading producer of woollen products in Canada. More than half of the sixteen working mills in the area were located in Almonte, where a 65 foot waterfall fuelled the mills' machines and the town's growth. Many mill buildings and structures remain from this 19th century development. The Mississippi Valley Textile museum is located in the Annex of the former Rosamond Woollen Company complex which was constructed in 1867. The Museum provides information on the early mills and their owners and features displays of period offices plus artifacts and machinery related to the beginnings of the textile industry. The Museum also presents special exhibits, highlights the history of the woollen industry and produces workshops on various aspects of textiles and textile design. A wonderful collection of unique gifts is also available in a charming gift shop.
