The Bytown Museum, housed in Ottawa's oldest stone building and located beside the Entrance Locks of the Rideau Canal, traces the history of Ottawa's early years, from the construction of the Rideau Canal and the early days of Bytown, to the city's emergence as Canada's capital. The Bytown Museum is unique in Canada as it is the only museum that preserves and displays artifacts illustrating the overall history of Bytown/Ottawa, our nation's capital. The Bytown Museum's collection of close to 15,000 artifacts includes some singularly important pieces, such as a cast of D'arcy McGee's death hand.
